"CREATIVITY TAKES COURAGE"

A small business began because one little girl adored baking, while another loved eating cake. I was that first little girl, filled with excitement as I helped my mother bake. From mixing the batter to the enticing aromas in the kitchen, my senses were in overdrive. These moments remain some of my fondest memories. Growing up in an average household, where we understood the stress our parents faced, baking provided an escape. Both as a child and an adult, baking allows me to disconnect and create, becoming one of my best selves.
There's truly nothing more fulfilling than being a mom, although baking is a close second. When my second-born, Sophia, a cake fanatic, turned five, I realized how integral baking was to my life. I transitioned from making treats for friends and family to running a small baking business.
My first order was a $100 dinosaur birthday cake, and yes i made it too big and two tiered. I was too excited about my first cake order and made a cake that could feed a small wedding. It was my best then with edible dinosaurs, trees, and plenty of not-so-perfect fondant-covered cake. Looking back, I feel proud of how much I've learned and grown over the past eight years. I had forgotten how messy my cake was until I stumbled upon this image a few days ago but never forgot that joy on my customers face. They were amazed at how much effort I put into their cake. What I'm trying to express is that I started baking out of passion, and it remains so. However, over the past eight years, I've learned to balance providing the best cakes for my customers while respecting my craft, experience, and time. I have taken classes and learned a lot from Chef Pinterest, Instagram, google, and watching yes baking shows.
I'm sharing this for anyone who is undercharging because they're just starting out, or if you're beginning to increase your prices as you gain experience. As a small business owner, I've constantly reassessed what I charge for cakes! Everyone has different skill levels, experience, and dedication to their craft. The great thing is, there are plenty of options for everyone, and those who appreciate your artistry will always come back. Most of my customers have felt my cakes were worth the price, though a few mentioned it was beyond their budget. Creating cakes and treats involves countless hours of detailed work. Some bakers are quick, some strive for perfection, and there are always mass-produced frozen options too. Everything has its place because everyone has different needs. Trust your instincts and do what works for you. It's the only way you'll grow. Love, Rachel Sutaria
